The Streaky Bay Catholic Church of Saint Canute is to host a visit by the Bishop of Copenhagen, Bishop Czeslaw Kozon, on Thursday, next week.
Bishop Kozon is in Australia for the World Youth Day being held in Sydney, but he will make a special trip to Port Lincoln and Streaky Bay. Catholic officials have said Bishop Kozon is very interested to see the Streaky Bay church built by a Dane, Fr Pedar M Jorgensen, who also named it after the Danish saint, Canute.
Next Wednesday, Bishop Kozon will visit Fr Jorgensen's grave in Port Lincoln before travelling to Streaky Bay on Thursday.
Bishop Kozon and Fr Laurie Quinn from Port Lincoln will say Mass at the church at 5pm. All members of the community are welcome to attend.
After Mass Bishop Kozon will have an hour to mix with the congregation. He will be presented with a watercolour painting of the Streaky Bay church, done by local artist Roger Harley.
Next Thursday is the anniversary of Saint Canute's death in 1086. Saint Canute was King of Denmark and a martyr. Saint Canute was canonized by Pope Paschal 2nd in 1101 and he and his brother were interred in the new St Canute's Cathedral in Odense in 1300.
Streaky Bay's Church of Saint Canute, built by Fr Jorgensen, was opened in 1912.
