Grey nomads flying high

Ceduna sees its fair share of grey nomads, but two who stood out last week were Kevin and Carole Haase, who travelled through in their one-of-a-kind French wooden aeroplane.

Starting at Caboolture, north of Brisbane, the couple travelled through far north Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia to arrive in Ceduna last Wednesday on their way to Port Augusta and Mildura.

Their plane is known as a Jodel DR1050, was built in 1960 and is the only one surviving in Australia.

Mrs Haase said she wanted to do the trip before she became too ill.

"I have multiple sclerosis so one of the main reasons is I wanted to do it and I couldn't do it (in a caravan)," she said.

The plane is not quite as fast as a commercial jet, with the flight from Forrest in Western Australia taking about six hours.

Mrs Haase said travelling over the Nullarbor was enjoyable.

"If it's beautiful scenery it's great but if there's not its tedious," she said.
