A medium rigid truck and a road train collided head on approximately 84 kilometres west of the Nullarbor Roadhouse at about 6.30pm on Saturday, completely blocking the Eyre Highway for nine hours.
The collision occurred after one truck veered onto the opposite side of the road.
Police from Yalata, Penong and Ceduna attended at the scene and were assisted by police from Eucla in Western Australia.
Eucla St John Ambulance. Eucla Fire and Emergency Services and State Emergency volunteers from Nullarbor treated both drivers at the scene and the driver of the medium rigid truck was trapped for a short period of time.
Country Fire Service volunteers from Ceduna, Wudinna, Wirrulla and Streaky Bay assisted at the scene to remove chlorine based products and pesticides from the road train which had ruptured because of the collision and clean other debris off the road.
The medium rigid truck was carrying paper based items.
The injured drivers, a 50-year-old from Victoria and a 30-year-old from Queensland, were initially transported from the scene by Eucla Ambulance and then conveyed to the Yalata Airstrip by a South Australian Ambulance Service crew from Ceduna.
Both males were airlifted with minor injuries, by the Royal Flying Doctor Service to the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Both drivers were admitted for overnight observation.
The Eyre Highway was blocked to all traffic for approximately nine hours to allow Emergency Services to clear the road of debris and allow the safe removal of the dangerous goods.
Traffic restrictions were kept in place at the scene of the collision by police and Country Fire Service for another 10 hours to allow the recovery of the trucks and further clean up of the area.
Police would like to remind all drivers to drive to the road and environment conditions they are presented with and if necessary reduce their speed.
Drivers should also ensure that if they feel fatigued they should stop and revive to ensure they survive the drive.
