Meals on Wheels celebrates 28 years in Ceduna

10/07/2008 3:25:00 PM
Meals on Wheels' Ceduna branch celebrated its 28th birthday last Wednesday with an afternoon tea and presentation of long-service badges.

The local branch was set up in 1983 and Joyce Chandler, who received her 20-year badge on the day, said it was much different when she started in 1987.

"It was. We had to do all our own serving up and when we came back we had to wash up all our pots and pans and we served it when we got there whereas today it's all packed individually named and packed as well," she said.

Also receiving long-service badges were Angela Provis (20 years), Melva Blumson (15 years), Kath Dunn (12 years) and Raelene Skinner (seven years), while Amy Kelly was away sick (seven years) and Val Shipard, Pauline Hoffrichter, Joyce Kiehne, Judy Goode and Pauline Nielsen are all due to receive three-year badges.

Also at the celebration were five recipients of Meals on Wheels: Jane Leach, Thelma and Fred Martin, Ken McPherson and Edith Halls. Ms Halls said she enjoyed the volunteers' visits.

"They're very good to me. They like coming to me because I play music," she said, referring to her country music CDs.

"They're very good. I'm very pleased with the meals," Ms Halls added.

Meals on Wheels deputy CEO Peter Radcliffe visited Ceduna for the day to mark the birthday and hand out the badges.

"It's great that the branch keeps it up celebrating their birthdays," he said.

Ceduna staff officer Melva Blumson said the group was looking for a treasurer who did not necessarily have to help with meals.

People wanting to join, or receive meals, can call the Ceduna District Health Services.
