Memorial to lives lost at sea

24/07/2008 3:30:00 AM
The final touches will be added in coming weeks to the memorial remembering those who have lost their lives at sea on the West Coast.

The main work of putting up the mosaic was completed during blustery conditions on Friday at Pinky Point in Thevenard.

The colourful tiles were glued into position on fibreglass webbing and this was put up in strips around the column.

"I really enjoyed doing the mosaic," organiser Chris Gascoyne said. "We had lots of volunteers help with the mosaic."

Still to be added to the memorial are the names of the 51 people who have died by drowning, shark attack, shipwrecks and other causes. A light and cover will be added to the top to make the column look more like a lighthouse.

Ms Gascoyne said each part of the mosaic had significance.

"(The man with the net) represents the Greek fishermen. There's a lot of Greeks in the community," she said.

"On the top (there's) a shark, a stingray and the seven sisters and that's a Dreamtime story and (the fish represent) just the fishing industry and the boats."

The design was created by Michael Tye. "I told the artist we wanted something substantial and unique," Ms Gascoyne said.

"We thought of the lighthouse and he came up with the design."

Ms Gascoyne said tourists had already commented that they were keen to see the memorial once it was completed.

A service will be conducted during Oysterfest to bless the memorial, which is entitled "Remembering and Moving On".
