Three boys from the Eyre Peninsula in the SAPSASA Under 12 State Cricket team recently competed against five other states and territories in Darwin.
Izaac Boylan from Wudinna, Sid Masters from Wharminda and Jay Green from Kapinnie proudly represented SA.
The team was coached by Ben Johnswood, a development officer for SACA, and managed by Sam Konnis, who used to teach and play cricket at Ceduna.
Selector and number one supporter was Neil Dansie, who had played cricket for SA with Don Bradman and is a legend in his own right. He was turning 80 but was an enthusiastic supporter whom the boys loved. He especially loved seeing the team beat NSW.
The whole team flew to Darwin on the Sunday morning but were staying in different parts of Darwin.
On Monday morning the team met at the Marrara Sporting Complex for the opening ceremony.
The SA team then caught a bus to The Gardens Oval where they played Victoria. The Vics batted first and made 9/184. Jay bowled eight overs and took 2/12. It was an exciting finish with SA just missing out, finishing two runs short after 50 overs at 6/182. Izaac came in when there were six runs needed off the last over. He made three but was then run out.
On Tuesday they battled NSW, who are always strong contenders. NSW batted first and SA had them all out for 66. Jay and Sid taking a wicket each. It took nearly all the 50 overs but eventually SA passed the score with two overs to go and three wickets in hand. Another exciting match and the first time SA had beaten NSW for a while.
On Wednesday morning the boys were put into mixed teams with the other boys and girls (who were also competing in Darwin) for a Super 8 competition. Then all the competitors and officials went out to see the jumping crocodiles.
Thursday was back to competition against home team Northern Territory. SA batted first making 100. Izaac and Sid were starting to put together a good partnership, but both got out straight after drinks for nine and two. NT were looking comfortable at 2/68 then collapsed when the spinners came back on, all out for 86. Jay bowled eight overs for 3/20.
On Friday SA played Queensland, who had not won a match. SA batted first and were all out for 45, both Izaac and Sid not bothering the scoreboard. Jay took 1/15 off five overs. Ian Healy's son was the wicketkeeper for Queensland.
Saturday was another rest day and some of the team went to Berry Springs for a barbecue and swim.
SA played ACT on the last day. SA batted first and made 99. Both Izaac and Sid made some runs (19 and 16), a great way to end the carnival. ACT were all out for 67; another good win for SA. Jay's figures were 1/25 off five overs.
At the closing ceremony SA were awarded with bronze medallions, which was a great achievement, behind Victoria and NSW who ended on equal points.
The Eyre Peninsula boys had played a vital part in the results not only batting and bowling but doing a great job in the field, Izaac taking four catches and effecting a run out, Sid with a catch and runout, Jay with a catch, and all three stopping many runs.
The Boylan and Masters families appreciate the grants given by CEP SAPSASA and Liz Penfold's office to help with expenses. It was a fantastic experience.
