Streaky Bay Bowling Club held its 20th annual Whiting Carnival last week, from Sunday, May 4, to Saturday, May 10.

The carnival was again very successful this year and to celebrate its 20th year, each of the competitors was given a unique keyring as a memento of the event.

Bowlers travelled from all over the state to play in the carnival, with two bowlers having competed in all 20 carnivals. Many others had competed on several occasions.

On the Sunday, club president Neil Montgomerie welcomed all of the bowlers and a mixed fours event was held. The winners for the day were Allan Kennedy, Sue Crane, Lou Crane and Jan Kennedy. Runners-up were Paul Smart, Heather and Graham Fromm and Sue Smart. Both the winner and runners-up were from Murray Bridge.

The catering ladies provided a very enjoyable lunch for the players and in the evening a delicious whiting tea was served.

On Tuesday a Mixed Pairs event was held and another very scrumptious lunch was provided by the catering ladies.

The winners were the team of Bas and Dora Fitzgerald from Cummins. Runners-up were Grant and Glenys McCracken from Coffin Bay on a count-back from Geoff Roberts and Raelene Birdseye.

Thursday was the Mixed Fours - Ladies Skipper event where the ladies took the opportunity to have the last bowl. Some great matches were played with the winners for the event Denise and Jack Caulfield and Pam Edmunds and Bruce Wallis who won on a count-back from Jan Kennedy, Graham Fromm, Sue Smart and Leon Crane. Dinner that night was a free barbecue with sheep donated by local farmers.

Murray Chester donated a rabbit skin rug which was auctioned and the proceeds of the auction and donations for the meal totalled over $1000. A "wrong bias" tin also netted over $100. A total of $1166 in donations was forwarded to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Friday was Ladies Fours. Twenty-six teams competed with the men from the club providing lunch and morning and afternoon tea and waiting on the ladies. They served soup and sandwiches and dessert and the meal was appreciated by all.

The weather was magnificent and the winners for the day were the local team of Gay Fiebig from Streaky Bay, Mary Bett from Keith, Lawline Wheaton from Streaky Bay and Rhonda Foster of Streaky Bay.

Runners-up were Barbara Mercorella from Prospect/Broadview, Melva Borgas from Kirton Point, Alice Andrews from Kirton Point and Barbara Andrews from Cummins.

On Saturday the Mens Fours was held. Winners were Gerardo Peroni, Murray Heath, Don Starke and John Rynne from Port Lincoln. Runners-up were Robin Binney, Mick Hallion, Rob Wilkins and Neville Nolan from Victor Harbor.

A meal of local whiting was held on the Saturday night as the conclusion to the festival. It was a fun-filled evening with skits as entertainment.

The Streaky Bay Bowling Club was praised for the way the carnival was run and the visitors commented on the wonderful week of bowls and friendship that they had all enjoyed.
