Netballers in winning form

17/07/2008 4:00:00 AM
Eyre Region netballers have performed well at the SA Regional Academy Champion-ships again this year.

Last week three Eyre region teams travelled to Adelaide to compete in the SA Regional Championships.

The under 15 team was coached by Gloria Ingham and Karen Hurrell.

Their umpire was Sheridan Gladwell who was successful in gaining her C badge during the carnival.

The team consisted of Zoe Joyce, Hannah Boylan (Mid West), Courtney Meier, Maddie Smart, Zoe Tapps (Far West), Lucy Gale (Port Lincoln), Brittny Wildman, Ruby Tonkin (Eastern Eyre), Sarah Hurrell and Emily Schwark (Great Flinders)

This group had a very tough draw with some very tall strong players in this division this year, however they stuck to their task and were able to manufacture several wins, defeating Mt Lofty 34-18, Spencer 24-22, and South East 32-28.

They drew with Northern 19-19 and had losses to Onkaparinga 21-18 and Lower North 23-9.

The Lower North team went on to win the division undefeated with a whitewash in the final 29-22 over Murray.

Lucy Gale (Port Lincoln/Imperials) and Zoe Joyce (Mid West/Central Eyre) were both chosen in the 2008 SA Academy team which will compete in Adelaide in October at the Catholic Schoolgirls Champion-ships.

The under 13 team was coached by Fiona Dahlitz and Donna McCallum.

Their umpire was Paige Murphy and the team consisted of Jordana McCallum, Mikaela Eatts, Emily Humphries, Brooke Turner, Amber Pengelley and Maddie Weiss (Eastern Eyre), Charlee Murnane, Chloe Harris, Isobelle Murphy and Lisa Smith (Great Flinders).

Jordana McCallum (Eastern Eyre/Rudall) and Emily Humphries (Eastern Eyre/Cleve) were selected in the top 10 players of the carnival in the under 13 age group.

The Under 17 team worked hard all carnival as a complete 11 player squad, with interchanges occurring in all games, and with them eventually winning the Championship.

It was back to back victories for the Under 17 team who were coached by Joanne Franklin and Trish Prout. Their umpire was Susanne Cave.

The team consisted of Casey Elliott, Letitia Crettenden, Kelsey Weiss, Keeley Mason, Abby Gillings (Eastern Eyre), Kelly Smith, Amelia Dahlitz, Paige Dahlitz, Amesha Meyers (Great Flinders), Emily Yancic and Emily Dennis (Port Lincoln).

Exceptionally accurate shooting, some terrific defensive intercepts, and great speed, vision and passing through the centre court saw Eyre run out back-to-back victors in the grand final 19 to 16 over Murray.

It’s interesting to note that as a region, Eyre achieved the most players in the carnival’s selected teams, with eight representatives across the three divisions.

Thanks to all the parents who were such a great support all year, and to all our wonderful sponsors, we have done you proud yet again.
